Luang Prabang’s northern district is a haven for Ecotourism

A short 3-hour drive north of Luang Prabang, the Muang Ngoi district capital of Nong Khiew is a great jumping off point for activities of all interests. Against a stunning backdrop of limestone karst formations, travellers can experience the real Laos.

Culture: many different tribes call the area of the Ou river basin their home. It is possible to explore their unique livelihoods of fishing and farming. Visit a typical village where the women wash their colourful dresses in the river, children play with puppies, and men chat and eat sticky rice. You might experience life among the Hmong, Khmu, Black Tai, Tai Leu or other groups.

Nature: scenic hikes through remarkable countryside and voyages on local riverboats can lead you to regions of caves, waterfalls and through untouched primary forest. Get out for a day and enjoy your picnic lunch amidst this wonderful panorama.
