Flower street Nguyen Hue

As a tradition, Ho Chi Minh City always decorates main streets in down town to welcome Lunar New Year – the Tet Festival. The streets decorated are Nguyen Hue, Dong Khoi, Le Loi, Le Duan Street. People are very excited to enjoy the beautiful streets every New Year. Nguyen Hue Flower Street is the main attraction. It is enjoyable and easy for families to participate.

Nguyen Hue Street (formerly Charner Canal and Avenue) became popular with flower vendors in the 1960s. Every Lunar New Year, this area  came alive. Flower boats from upcountry arrived to sell their exotic blooms. After a few years of relocation, the Nguyen Hue Tet flower street festival came back in 2004. The new emphasis, however, is not buying and selling of flowers, but more for aesthetic appreciation and for visitors to come and take photographs with backdrop themes such as lotus ponds, canals with bridges, village life and horse drawn carriages.

Take your family for a stroll down Nguyen Hue Flower Street this Tet. It’s a colourful affair.

A Family Tet in the Countryside

If the hustle of the city during Tet is too much for you, head to the countryside, where Khiri Vietnam can help you stay with a family for Tet. You can prepare food and sweet meats used in the Tet celebrations.

You can join local people in Can Tho, for example, making Banh Tet – a kind of traditional cake of the South, made from fruit jam. Visitors can make Banh Tet with their hosts. This is an occasion for them to experience the warm atmosphere of Tet in the countryside. Besides Banh Tet, other traditional foods are prepared to worship ancestors. Be prepared to see (and eat) braised pork, pickled bean sprouts and much more. Having the year-end lunch with the host’s family is a most privileged experience for any visitor. They also can join the celebrations of New Year’s Eve with the host.

Expect a lot of eating, drinking and celebrations. Welcome to Tet in Vietnam!
