990 Lobster catching

Try a unique experience in the Cambodian jungle of the southern Cardamom Mountains near Chi Phat. We sail by boat upriver – not to meet Colonel Kurtz, but to catch lobsters.

After dinner with the locals in their village, we’ll leave for lobster catching. Your boat driver escorts you to Stung Prat. Here we board a boat that takes us along Stung Prat and Prek Chi Phat by river to where the lobsters appear.

During our boat trip along the river the temperature becomes cooler. In the calm evening skies you will see fireflies along the riverbanks and in the trees. We stop the boat for a while to take in the magical scenery that surrounds us.

We continue our way up the river. Our boat driver has the correct information of where the lobsters appear. He makes sure we stop at the right place.

When we arrive at the lobster catching spot, our boat driver stops the boat and demonstrates how to use a stick to catch the large crustaceans from the shallows. Have a go and try and catch the lobsters yourself.

As we go, we pass local villagers who do this kind of work daily to be able to support their family.

Lobster catching is a seasonal activity and the best period when the most lobsters are available is between May and October.
