Visiting Remote Villages Off the Road to Mandalay

Earlier this year Khiri Travel Myanmar was invited by HelpAge International to visit four remote villages around Mandalay in upcountry Myanmar.

The villages are close to Meikhtila and Monywa, both sited about a 2.5-hour drive from Mandalay. The villages are far from the beaten track and not visited by many westerners. For us it was a true highlight to find ourselves surrounded by the curious and very welcoming locals.

While in general HelpAge International’s work focuses on the elderly in isolated villages, the communities we visited were part of the Village Development Committee (VDCs) project. These involve a more inclusive approach to development with a focus on the entire community. In particular attention goes out to those vulnerable social groups including older people, women, people with disabilities, children, and landless farmers.

To be able to visit villages in Myanmar where no other tourists had been before was, as always, an intriguing experience. Also, to see some of the great programs HelpAge International has built up and to meet their staff and the local people in the villages was very special.
