Beer Lao: A Country in a Bottle

In Myanmar it might only rain beer during the wet season. In Laos however, the beer flows strong and pure all year round.

Founded in 1971, Lao Brewery Company Limited first began brewing its signature beer in 1973. Beer Lao is a premium beer that combines the mastery of European beer making methods with an ingredient that is ingrained into the culture of Laos — rice.

Beer Lao produces 210 million liters of beer annually. According to the company, its market share accounts for nearly 99% of the national beer market in Laos.

For the Laotians, Beer Lao is an iconic part of their everyday lives. In cities, small towns, and remote villages one can find the Beer Lao logo on chairs, shop fronts, umbrellas, t-shirts, posters, billboards and on the multitude of bottles in homes. It’s a way of life, a country in a glass.

On the other side of Konglor Cave in Khammouane province is a village that is only accessible by a seven kilometer boat ride through pitch darkness inside a mountain. After cruising under the mountain with tons of rock pressing down above your head, emerging into the light at the end of the tunnel, there isn’t a better way to get your frayed senses back than with a cold Beer Lao. And yes, even this remote village has plenty of Beer Lao chilled to perfection.

Cheers Beer Lao!
