A Day at Koh Kret
Last Saturday afternoon me and a friend went for walk around Koh Kret’s market, especially during the weekends it is very popular among Thai tourists. Part of the attraction is the huge variety of Thai khanom (desserts) and related food products, plus more than a few nice riverside places to relax and enjoy some tasty food. There are also plenty of souvenir shops, selling everything from T- shirts to pottery products. Of course the last ones are more interesting as Koh Kret has a large Mon community who have been making a living out of pottery for ages. Nowadays the pottery makers have branched out a bit from their traditional designs and used cartoon characters for inspiration!
Besides the market Koh Kret also has some temples with a few Mon touches, pottery museum, a 200 year old rubber tree, and an overall nice, relaxed, upcountry atmosphere.
Koh Kret is an island in the Chao Phraya River, 20 km north of Bangkok and usually reached via Pak Kred’s Wat Sanam Neua where you can take a short ferry ride.
Khiri Travel offers a special half day tour called the Koh Kred Explorer to its guests.
