Learn Lacquer Painting in Hanoi
The Vietnamese traditional lacquer painting technique son mai was first a popular art form used for painting pagoda statues or small items such as plates and vases. Unfortunately, today it is difficult for the traditional artists to compete with the ever increasing, mass produced, ‘lacquer art’ that is now so widely available. Traditional artists need a public that can appreciate the skill and expertise that is required for their art.
In Hanoi, the Fine Arts School has been teaching traditional lacquer painting since 1930. The gallery supports, promotes and helps develop artists devoted to the preservation of traditional son mai techniques, which are also used in modern art. Khiri Travel Vietnam offers classes for anyone willing to learn this fascinating art of traditional lacquer painting as well.
In a session, we focus on Vietnam’s original painting techniques using 100% natural lacquer. All the instructors are professional painters themselves and have many years of experience in traditional son mai. The classroom is set in a picturesque Vietnamese style garden house for added inspiration.
To complete their artistic stay in Hanoi, guests can overnight at the home of Le Hong Tai, a renowned contemporary Vietnamese artist known for his abstract lacquer paintings.
