things to do Aural trekking, Cambodia

Khiri Travel Cambodia offers a unique trekking opportunity in the Central Cardamom Mountains in Kampong Speu Province. Located northwest of Phnom Penh, this area is the location of the highest peak in the Kingdom, Phnom Aural. To reach the 1813-meter summit on foot requires a 3-day trek combined with a short section by truck on a rutted dirt track.

He who climbs upon the highest mountains laughs at all tragedies, real or imaginary.

– Friedrich Nietzsche –

The area surrounding Mount Aural is very rural and is not a major tourist destination in Cambodia. Despite the fact that the province’s name, Speu, means star fruit in Khmer, Kampong Speu Province is most famous for its palm sugar and wine. The government has established a wildlife sanctuary in this mountainous area to protect the region’s biodiversity.

The trek to the top of Phnom Aural takes two days of hiking with an overnight in a hammock at a village homestay. Part of the trekking is through thick bamboo forest with a chance to see some rare birds and other wildlife. Your travellers will be rewarded for the last challenging 400-meter hike to the summit with nice cool air and commanding views of the lowland rice fields. The second overnight is a basecamp of sorts at 1400 meters in a village called Ta Ey Sai.
