“Off the beaten track,” meaning the exploration of less popular or less traveled regions is a well-used cliché in the world of travel these days. Previously travel demand was for better-known places. However, nowadays, the popular trend is for tours of unexplored parts of a country. We are even approaching a stage where we hear people saying they try to avoid Lonely Planet spots: destinations described in this best selling budget guidebook that are sure to be more crowded. Providing guests with a real off the beaten track holiday becomes more and more of a challenge.

When it comes to a relatively unexplored country such as Laos, isn’t it all off the beaten track? Khiri Travel Laos spoke about this topic with sales manager Jason.

Is there already a “beaten track” in Laos and if so, what does this track look like?

You could call Vientiane – Vang Vieng – Luang Prabang the beaten track of Laos. This trio of cities is by far the most popular destination for visitors to Laos. Recently, more people are starting to explore the beautiful Bolaven Plateau in the south. However, popular destination or “beaten track” is all relative in Laos since tourism, although growing, is still far behind on countries such as Thailand or Indonesia.

If you need to organize a trip in Laos for travelers who love the ultimate off the beaten track holiday, where would you send them?

I would highly recommend Viengsay to enjoy a taste of the remoteness that keeps this area very special. This area in northeastern Laos also has an interesting historical significance from the time of the Indochina War. Khiri Travel has expertise regarding rare and remote places all over the county; there are countless new destinations to explore.

How do you distinguish yourself from other travel companies who also offer these kinds of holidays?

We have three Khiri offices in Laos so we’re closer to the local people and very knowledgeable about the products throughout the country. We are also a western managed company so we understand the needs of our target markets. We’re not only helping clients get off the beaten track, but doing so in a way that’s comfortable and suitable for them.

Khiri is always interested in new tours and activities. We work very closely with a few local tour operators and support them in develop new products and experiences for travelers. The only way to stay off the beaten track is to continuously innovate in new ideas and experiences.
