Secret Caves Hiding in Vietnam’s Limestone Mountains

One of the things that we always highlight and mention to our agents and travelers is that there are still so many things to explore in Vietnam. Hidden places are everywhere and there is no better feeling than suddenly finding yourself somewhere without any other travelers. Sometimes a place unfamiliar and unknown to locals even.

Working in the tourism industry and in exotic countries as Vietnam gives us the unique opportunity to discover these places. A great example is the world’s largest underground cave discovered years ago but never really explored and mapped until 2009. Son Doong Cave is located in Pho Ngan Ke Bang National Park in central Vietnam.

Soon Dong Cave - nature wonder - Vietnam

One of those secret places is the cave located just 15 minutes walking from the Ban Gioc Waterfalls, near the border between Vietnam and China. We were exploring Cao Bang Province and before we knew it we saw ourselves climbing some steps heading to ‘some caves’ that we had never heard of before. Someone we met at the Ban Gioc Waterfalls advised us to go. Once we reached the highest part of the stairs, we were blown away by the landscape: limestone mountains surrounding a secret rice field and at the very end of this we could see the entrance to the caves. In Vietnam there are plenty of caves to see, but this one was different. The way to get there and the secret location of this cave, made it very special for us. Besides, we were entirely on our own in this cave. We entered and we had the opportunity to discover the place in complete silence and at that moment we were feeling like we discovered a new natural wonder!

Nguom Ngao Cave is another spectacular limestone cave carved by an underground river and extending for several kilometers. Both this cave and the one with the secret entrance near Ban Gioc Waterfalls are located in the northernmost province of Vietnam called Cao Bang. Khiri Travel Vietnam can arrange the drive from Hanoi to Cao Bang, which takes 6-7 hours. Our guide shows guests the Ba Be Lake along the way and we like to spend one night in a Vietnamese homestay, another great and very recommendable experience!
