Spotlight On–Guide Eka’s Dream Job

Please tell us a little bit about yourself.

I began working for Khiri Travel about six months ago as a guide for high-end American clients. I am from Yogyakarta where I live with my husband and small daughter. I speak Javanese, English and am learning Dutch. In my free time I like to go the cinema to watch movies to improve my English. I love to travel but I also love my hometown’s museums, festivals and cafes. I go with my family but if anything spontaneous comes up, I just go regardless if others want to join or not!

What inspired you to choose this kind of career?

This has been my dream job since high school. I love to travel and show the beauty of my country. Being a guide comes naturally to me, as I love to interact with people. I wanted to be an outbound guide to see the world outside Indonesia. Now I appreciate my own country more as I understand why clients want to visit here. In Java there are many cultures, beaches, and volcanoes. It is fun to experience the differences in people and languages when you travel from one area to another.

What is your favorite dish/food? And Why?

My favorite is mie goreng (fried noodles), but only if my mum or I make it. We know exactly how much garlic to use, how to fry the eggs and we always use lots of extra veggies. Noodles are my specialty!

How would you describe Khiri Travel’s clients and how do you meet and exceed their expectations?

I can only speak for the clients I work with, but I feel they are privileged, no need to worry about money. They are easy going but want to be informed about everything. I am always honest, responsible and punctual. I like to anticipate things by being a good listener. As they enjoy their trip, it’s great to build a relationship with them. I’m still in touch with many of my clients.

What do you think are new destinations?

There are still a few villages that produce some local crafts by hand. They are in the area of the Borobudur complex—hidden in plain sight! Nobody knows about them yet so I would love to explore the possibilities of this location.

How do you guide clients on the Khiri Travel Signature Experiences?

I read the itinerary in detail and consider how to make the best of the order and schedule of events. Besides getting to know the clients, I also get to know the DMC people, how they work and what they expect from the guide. I also get to know the agents and prefer to work with only a few so I can get to know them and their clients well.
