Back Door to Kep and Coastal Cambodia

October 5, 2015 by | Filed Under: Cambodia, Regional News, Travel, Vietnam

Crossing the national border from Xa Xia in the Ha Tien Province of southwestern Vietnam into the far southeastern corner of Cambodia is not on most travel itineraries. In fact, it’s such a sleepy border crossing you’ll wonder if anyone ever passes through this seaside border at all. In fact, very few travelers do!

One of the first things one notices when coming from Vietnam into Cambodia though Cambodia’s Prek Chak border checkpoint is the noise, or rather, lack of noise. Immediately the mood changes from the bustling and endless flow of horns, motorbikes and people in Vietnam to the quiet, calm and amazingly friendly feel of rural Cambodia.

Cambodia - border crossing

After clearing immigration and customs (Cambodian visas are available on arrival for 30 USD), you will make your way along the coast, between lush rice fields and through mountains and jungles that have formed the natural border between Cambodia and Vietnam for millennia.

During the less than one-hour drive from the border along the coast to Kep is an opportunity to stop at an isolated beach. This relaxed route is perfect for intrepid cyclists or anyone interested in experiencing one of the most beautiful regions in Cambodia without the need to travel through Phnom Penh or Siem Reap.
