Historic Landmark - Vietnam - Explore Hanoi Like a Local - Hoa Lo Prison

It’s not very difficult to find travelers intrigued with Vietnamese history. Vietnam’s major cities represent a unique mix of the youthful dynamism of modern Asia and the exotic history of ancient times. Hanoi, despite rapid modernization, has managed to preserve a remarkable collection of historic landmarks. One of the most famous areas of the city is the Old Quarter, a crowded but fascinating maze of “36 streets”, where the organized commotion of Hanoi’s traditional street life takes place amidst a concentration of French colonial architecture with a touch of Chinese influence.

With ages old citadels, museums and mausoleums as historic landmarks, Hanoi offers plenty of ways to travel back in time. One of Khiri Travel Vietnam’s favorite spots in the city is Hoa Lo Prison. Built by the French to imprison political prisoners, Hoa Lo was sardonically nicknamed the Hanoi Hilton during the Vietnam War by American POWs. The prison cells were demolished in 1990 and part of the original complex was reconstructed into a museum to which we take your travelers during our “Hanoi Like a Local” city tour.

Located just minutes away from Hanoi’s popular Hoan Kiem Lake, Hoa Lo Prison Museum is an impressive structure. Besides being one of the best-preserved museums in Hanoi, one of the most impressive displays is in the guillotine room, where the original gruesome pieces are exhibited.
