Yangon After Sunset

old colonial buildings - Myanmar - Yangon

When the sun slowly sinks down behind Yangon’s skyline, the city glows in a special, almost mystical light. The old colonial buildings start glowing in soft orange light and the social atmosphere suddenly changes at the same moment. This time of the evening is when Yangonites leave their office, house or shops to stroll down the alleys.

Yangon After Sunset - Myanmar

The kids start playing football in one of the side streets, the men meet for a tea or beer in one of the beer stations and women chat with their friends and neighbors about the local gossip. It is such a peaceful and friendly atmosphere that I often forget that I am a foreigner in this city. Everyone gathers and shares information, laughs, does some last minute shopping for their dinner or visits one of the pagodas, mosques or temples on their way home.

Observing the city slowly getting ready for the night is one of my favorite experiences in Yangon. Strolling through a night market for a Burmese snack on the way to the Shwedagon Pagoda fills my heart with contentment every time with the warmth, friendliness and leisurely pace of this city on the move.

The Shwedagon Pagoda, the most iconic landmark of Yangon and Myanmar, can be seen from many corners of the city as the glow of the giant golden stupa leads me towards this sacred site. I love the welcoming smell of incense sticks and flowers at the entrance gates of the pagoda. After enjoying the spirit of the Shwedagon, I continue to Chinatown in the downtown area around 19th Street. This narrow lane is well equipped with BBQ restaurants and beer stations. Friends and colleagues gather here to enjoy discussing the events of the day.

There are constantly new additions to Yangon’s nightlife. Several bars have opened up around the different neighborhoods catering to everything from karaoke to select cocktails, wines or refreshing fruit juices. Yangon nightlife is a fascinating mixture of modernity and traditional in a city that is changing and reinventing itself almost daily.

The time to visit Yangon and Myanmar is now before the traditional landscape and authentic culture become overshadowed by modern updates. For more information about tours to Myanmar, please leave your contact information in the form below.
