Exploring Bangkok Differently through Thai Life: People and Culture

Most visitors who arrive in Bangkok start off with a standard pattern: visit the Grand Palace, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, the Temple of Dawn and Wat Po. Those who have been to Bangkok before or those who are more adventurous may opt for a bicycle or walking tour or a cooking course. These top attractions are wonderful, however, Khiri Travel is always looking for new and different approaches to introduce Thai life and culture to our clients!

Recently, we discovered an unusual and very enjoyable way of discovering Bangkok. It involves a fun competition with other clients, following instructions, interpreting clues and getting our hands a bit dirty. The following is an account of our inspection of this amazing adventure of discovery.

Bangkok - Khiri Travel Thailand

Starting at a meeting point near one of Bangkok’s main avenues, Rama IV, we met the other participants, divided into two groups and got an introduction of what the next three hours would involve. The object of the competition is to score the most points while using the least amount of money in the least amount of time. The group with the most points is the winner.

Each group received envelopes with instruction cards and pocket money to help us along the way. Some company staff accompanied us to help out where necessary and take photos and video clips.

The first task consisted of going to an old style food court, taste some signature Thai food dishes and identify the ingredients. Tasting competitors were blindfolded of course! Next we had to get ourselves to the Klong Toey Market and start hunting for ingredients of a famous Thai dish. In between, we took photos of other “requirements.” Anyone in for kissing a live fish?! From the market we “tuk tucked” to a riverside temple, where our next unusual task was to find a skeleton image. Clearly the organizers of this event have a good sense of humor!

In a nearby restaurant, our group got to try out our cooking skills. We naturally ate the tasty results and happily got awarded full points from the chef! Next we crossed the Chao Phraya River on a small ferryboat and continued the contest riding bicycles around Bangkok’s “Green Lung” also known as Bang Kra Chao. In a nearby park, a master Fruit Carver tried (in vain) to teach us the basics of turning a piece of cucumber into art. Experiencing Thai life doesn’t mean you’ll learn all Thai skills on the first try.

After returning to Klong Toey we headed for the final part of this fun trip. At a modern Thai food court, we ordered several classic Thai dishes. For the first time visitors in the competition, this way to tour Bangkok was a very challenging experience indeed! The final result ended in a great lunch for all participants and afterwards we got the results of the competition. Despite our loss, our Khiri Travel group considers this contest a great way to experience authentic Thai food, markets and local communities.
