Alila Luang Prabang

A new five- star boutique hotel will open in October in Luang Prabang. The hotel, managed by the Alila Group, is located on the grounds of a former prison.

Khiri Travel visited the new Alila Luang Prabang in the beginning of August.

Karin van Zyl, who is managing the opening of this hotel – and Alila’s existing 3 Nagas property in the town centre – gave us the tour.

Alila Luang Prabang is located in the former governor’s residence (later used as the local prison), close to Wat Monorom. It is a 10 to 15 minute walk to down town.

Most of the hotel’s main buildings are from French colonial times. Some new buildings in the exact same style were also erected. The spa, cooking school and bar are accommodated in Lao-style wooden houses.

Even though the property is quite large, it will only offer 23 luxury suites, all nestled around either the main pool or the reflecting pool. Two suites come with a small private pool. A few have a private garden. Two corner suites have private access to towers (erected during the prison days), where suite guests will have exclusive access and can enjoy a glass of wine and the view.

All rooms are very spacious, with high ceilings and oversized bathrooms. The views are the best you can have in Luang Prabang: colonial architecture with the backdrop of the trademark limestone mountains of Northern Laos. The sense of arrival is amazing.

The Alila Luang Prabang will be a great addition to five-star options in this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The opening of the hotel is on schedule for October 2010, Karin assures us.
