Khiri Vietnam is a fan of the Green Vietnam EcoLodge in Tuyen Quang province in north Vietnam. The innovative lodge is an ideal stopover on the overland trip from Hanoi to Sapa. The lodge is located on 25 hectares of agricultural land.

Green-Lodge

Green Vietnam EcoLodge is located on a hill containing longan orchards and endangered hardwood stands as well as vegetable and flower gardens. The EcoLodge overlooks rice fields, forests and mountains.

The Green Vietnam team has created a model farm, producing fruits and vegetables in harmony with nature. Now it is developing non-profit activities which will train more farmers to introduce new high-value fruit trees and promote sustainable agro-forestry practices.

The EcoLodge itself is a traditional stilt house, elegantly finished with modern fixtures. It offers comfortable sleep, modern sanitation, hot water, delicious food and a wonderful view of the surrounding mountains. The lodge will add five private bungalows in February 2011. The stilt house accommodation is like a dormitory with shared toilet and bath.

The lodge is a delightful place to stay for one or two days. It is near the Cham Chu nature reserve.

Owner, Mr Vuong Ngoc Quang has a colourful past. He was a 12-year old street boy in Hanoi in 1991 shining shoes and delivering newspapers. In 1994 he started to learn English and sell post cards. Quang met an American national in 2001 and worked with him. In 2004, when visiting the countryside, Quang and his colleague had an idea to set up an organic garden to help mountain people. In 2007, Quang went back to his province of Tuyen Quang with an idea to plant a fruit forest with support from his American colleague and friends.

To date, Quang and seven local families have planted 12,000 fruit trees and 30,000 hard wood trees. In 2009, to finance the project, Quang set up a stilt house for foreign travellers. Five private bungalows are scheduled to open in January 2011. Guests enjoy the freshest ingredients from the garden when eating at the lodge. Produce is also sold in Hanoi markets.
