Phnom Penh is not often perceived as a destination for families. Think again. The city has plenty to offer. Khiri Travel Cambodia has developed a new day tour in the city aimed at families with children. Spend the morning learning how to cook traditional Khmer food (even if you’re an absolute beginner) followed by an informative afternoon on the Tonle Sap river.

Your family starts the day at 08.30am, when you are collected from your hotel and taken to frizz restaurant’s Cambodian cooking class for a half day authentic Khmer cooking experience. Frizz was established by a Dutch expat with a passion for traditional Khmer cuisine. The cooking class is the first and only Khmer cooking school for travellers in Phnom Penh. The approach is fun, relaxed and interactive. You and your family can work together or individually.

The day starts with a tour around the local market where you choose the ingredients for the two dishes you’ll be making. The bustling markets in Phnom Penh are especially vibrant in the cool of the morning. At the market you and your family will have the opportunity to select local vegetables, herbs, spices and other ingredients.

While you are cooking the teacher will be there to guide you. The aim is that you really enjoy eating the dishes that you prepare. The course finishes at 1pm with your lunch served on the breezy rooftop terrace of frizz.

After lunch a driver takes you to Wat Phnom, a local temple with several friendly resident monkeys.

Later continue to Phnom Penh’s riverfront. Here you catch a boat to take you on the Tonle Sap River. Your English speaking boat driver will be able to explain the sights. Once on board you can enjoy the views of Phnom Penh from the Tonle Sap. We will pass local villages nestled on the banks of the river and see traditional floating houses and markets up close. Along the way you can also see villagers fishing along the river and Khmer agriculture. There are several opportunities for taking pictures along the way.

After an entertaining afternoon on the river, return to the city where you driver will take you and your family to your hotel.
