Room Availability in Yangon to Remain Challenging
Many visitors to Myanmar will notice that it is not always easy to find a hotel room in Myanmar. Yangon can be especially difficult. Thankfully, some new three-star hotels are planned to open in the capital.
Clover Hotel is planning a new property in the centre of town. It is scheduled to open by September 2012. The Green Hill Hotel has already opened with 150 rooms near the Kandawgyi Park in Yangon. The Alfa Hotel is expected to re-open in the coming months. It has the added advantage of being within walking distance to Scott’s Market, where a wide range of handicrafts and souvenirs can be purchased at competitive prices.
Khiri Travel expects more three-star hotels to open in the coming months. However, due to a big increase of business delegations visiting Yangon, a shortage of rooms seems likely for the foreseeable future. We suggest that tour operators should manage client expectations in advance. Agents should prepare clients to remain flexible in the choice of hotel room, especially in Yangon where demand far outstrips supply.
Up country the hotel room situation can be tight in the peak season, November to February, so hotels typically ask for a payment deposit upon reservation of the room.
