Explore the Stung Treng Countryside by Bicycle
Take the road less traveled — literally. Stung Treng or “River of Reeds” is one of Cambodia’s most unknown destinations. This northwestern region, located close to where the Sekong and Mekong rivers meet, is most often an “outpost” for travelers passing through. The quiet spot is a mix of peaceful farming and fishing villages scattered with rice fields and bamboo huts — a truly authentic view of the Khmer people. Spending a day here is a rare experience and a unique story to take home with you.
As you cycle along the stunning scenery of the Sekong river you’ll come across the Stung Treng Women’s Development Centre at Mekong Blue — an NGO which aims to break the cycle of poverty and illiteracy for women and children in the area. Talk with the women at the centre and purchase gorgeous products, like their indigenous Cambodian golden silk scarve, hand-made by the local ladies.
Your leisurely spin continues across the Sekong Bridge and along the Mekong River, passing a school, the Mekong Bird Resort and endless natural scenery. Smile at the locals as you ride by — they may be surprised to see you in this tourist-less place!
After a freshly prepared lunch at a small village, you’ll give your wheels a rest and jump in a kayak for a trip through the flooded forests and remote Ramsar wetlands. Marvel at the massive trees and listen to the sounds of birds, as you glide along the river. The kayak tour ends as you approach the Mekong lodge, but before you hop back on your bike, make sure to take a dip along one of the many sandy freshwater beaches.
As you bike along the Sekong and come across another neighborhood, watch as ethnic Laos villagers make ”Krolan” (sticky rice) and package this very popular travel snack in a natural bamboo casing.
See the sun set over the Sung Teng landscape as you make your final stop at a village where families make noodles by hand, and take in the last bit of this tranquil spot before returning to ‘reality’.
