Myanmar food

Myanmar has a lot of different food to offer but often people come back from a trip saying the food was “boring” because they only tried the curries. In Myanmar there is no word for “tourist” – there is only a word for “guest” and guests are always given the best and most expensive food (which is often a curry with meat or fish and a generous portion of oil on top of it!)

Some tips when ordering food in Myanmar:

  • Order many side dishes, starters and salads
  • Ask around for noodles dishes like ohno kyaukswe, shan noodles of Mie shay – A unique, delicious and 1 bowl is often enough
  • Ask the chef in a restaurant to prepare the food “like he would cook for his family” to get something really tasty (nothin’ like a ‘home cooked’ meal!
  • Tell the waiter you don’t want MSG (Ajinomoto) in your food.

We hope these tips will help you enjoy a tastier trip to Myanmar!
