Experience the True Colours of Laos through its Festivals
Dive deep into Lao culture with these selections.
Lao New Year
Prepare to get wet in this celebration during Laos’ hottest time of the year. Locals splash water on the old and young alike, amid a party-like atmosphere, as a blessing for good wishes in the coming new year. Note: not for the faint of heart or who might not enjoy an inescapable three-day noisy nation-wide water fight!
Luang Prabang Boat Racing Festival
To hasten the end of the rainy season, boat races are held in the Khan river to lure the Nagas (water spirits) out of the rice fields. This raucous festival is best enjoyed with a Beerlao on the riverbank as locals cheer on their village’s crew.
The Fireboat Festival
To mark the end of Buddhist Lent and to pay respects to the river, villagers create large floats of candles and offerings which are paraded through town and launched into the river. This is best seen in Luang Prabang, where the entire city is illuminated with candles.
That Luang Festival
Laos’ holiest shrine is honored with a week long festival culminating on this day, filled with entertainments, market fairs and merit making by people from all over the country.
