How to Dodge the Crowds at Angkor Wat

Without question, the most worthwhile and wonderful destination in Cambodia is the magnificent Angkorian temples just outside of Seam Reap. These awe-inspiring ancient artifacts are now icons of Cambodia’s national identity and the highlight of many tourist trips to Cambodia.

It is no secret that Angkor Wat and the surrounding temples of this vast archeological park have no shortage of tourists from all over the world. Remarks about the temple sites being overcrowded with large groups of tourists are common.

Most of the tourist groups assemble outside the front of Angkor Wat ready to take pictures of the temples across the left side of the lotus pond and linger for sunset views. Khiri Travel Cambodia and our expert guides recommend experiencing Angkor in a more peaceful and serene atmosphere by getting up early and going to the east gate of Angkor Wat to watch the sunrise. By doing so, your clients can enjoy the quiet of the early morning at the temples in relative peace. There will be a chance later in the day to continue around the temples before the heat of the day really kicks in. We will walk a small path, which takes your clients to the backdoor entrance where they can experience a much less crowded visit to this magnificent temple.

If we are fortunate and the cloud cover is just right, the first view of the morning sky will be dark blue. It then slowly brightens and warms to shades of crimson, pink and red as the sun rises over the temples. After the sunrise we make our way around the temple complex in the cool morning air. Your clients will enjoy taking photos in the soft morning light of the ancient pillars and carved stone as the light of day rises overhead.

The sunrise is around 06.20 am, but the early rise is so worth it. After the tour we will return to the hotel for a late breakfast.
