Myanmar Opens New Areas to Visitors
The Myanmar authorities have announced that more areas are opening up for foreign tourists. The more interesting areas that now allow foreigners to visit without pre-arranged permits are Sittwe and Mrauk U in Rakhine State, Mt Victoria in Chin State and Loikaw in Kayak State (south of Inle Lake).
Khiri Myanmar is planning to develop some new overland trips throughout the country bringing back the spirit of real adventure travel in frontier areas. Khiri Myanmar has also developed some interesting new programs in Mrauk U, going to the ancient temple city by car and returning by boat.
Things are changing quickly. Myanmar welcomed about 1 million visitors in 2012 and is predicting 1.3 million this year. The country has about 790 hotels, 23 of them four- and five-star.
The US hotel chain Hilton has confirmed it was entering the Yangon hotel market with a brand new five-star property, due to open in 2014.
Best Western has said it is in negotiations and will release details for its first property in Myanmar very soon. Accor, has announced that it had concluded agreements to manage three hotels in the country. The properties are due to open over the next two years.
