Three quarters of the people of Myanmar make their living by growing or processing crops. The primary crops are rice, peanuts and sugar cane. The most important products for export are beans, teak, rice and hardwood. Pigs, buffalo and cattle are the main livestock for the population.
Many of the agricultural traditions of working on the field, harvesting wheat, growing crops on water (for example the floating vegetable gardens of Inle Lake), and buffalo herding haven’t changed much in Myanmar over the years.
When we’re on the road travelling the country, there is much going on along the way. Khiri Travel Myanmar gives clients the time to stop, have a look, talk with the locals about farming and learn about local production methods.

Floating garden on Inle Lake – July 2012
A photo of the floating gardens on which Intha farmers grow flowers, tomatoes, squash and other fruit and vegetables. The farmers build up the gardens with help of seaweed they collect from the bottom of the lake. They paddle up and down between the rows tending their crops.
Farming next to U Bein bridge – January 2012
During the dry season, when the water in Taungthanman Lake is low, the farmers grow rice and different seasonal vegetables near famous U Bein bridge. In the summer when the water rises again, they go fishing at the same spot.
Harvesting between Inle and Kalaw – January 2012
Harvesting wheat in the area between Kalaw and Inle Lake in Shan state, a beautiful area to drive through. It makes you want to stop everywhere to take pictures. It is also possible to trek (two to four days) from Kalaw to Inle staying overnight in a local homestay or at a monastery.
Bagan – July 2012
Bagan from another perspective. This photo was taken from the top of one of the temples in the afternoon. The farmers walk by bringing their livestock home from pasture for the day.
Bago area – October 2012
Duck farmers between Mt Kyaiktiyo (Golden Rock) and Bago city. The farmers also grow various kinds of vegetables in the same area as where they keep the animals.
Between Inle and Kalaw – October 2012
Growing seasonal vegetables in the area between Kalaw and Inle Lake. No matter what time of the year you visit, there is always something nice to see and enjoy in the rolling hills of the Shan State.
Peanut harvest near Bagan – November 2010
Being the sixth biggest peanut producer in the world, you find lots of areas in Myanmar where peanuts grow. This photo is taken in a village near Bagan during the annual peanut harvesting.
Dalla, near Yangon – November 2012
A duck farmer bringing his ducks to the market in Dalla village, just across the river from Yangon. A beautiful place if you want to visit a local village not far from the city. It takes you a ferry crossing and 15 minutes to reach Dalla on the other side of the river. From here you can easily get a trishaw to take you to visit a local market, pagodas and explore the local life with no other tourists around.
