‘Brightness of the Arts’ in Siem Reap
When in Siem Reap, a visit to the Phare Ponleu Selpak (‘Brightness of the Arts’) circus is a must for every visitor. It’s a circus like none other. It’s very different to a western style circus.
Phare is a Cambodian non-profit art organization founded in 1994 by eight young Cambodians returning from refugee camps at the Thai border near Battambang. The purpose of Phare is to improve the development of local communities by providing education as well as leisure and professional artistic training.
The circus performers are talented and passionate. It shows in their performance. The circus puts up different shows. Which one a visitor sees, depends on the time they visit. All of their shows are fantastic. They focus on both traditional and contemporary themes. This really is the rebirth of Cambodian dance and culture.
The shows can be seen in Siem Reap and Battambang and are performed in the evening. Khiri Travel Cambodia takes guests on a tuk-tuk to the circus tent and back to their hotel.
