Coffee Culture in Vietnam
Coffee in Vietnam is serious business. It is not enough to just taste this potent drink. Learning the preparation technique is an important part of the total coffee experience.
Vietnam’s coffee is known all over the world and people from everywhere come to this country to taste and learn more about this industry that has been a tradition in Vietnam dating back to the mid 1800’s. Coffee culture in Vietnam started being a mixture between French influence and Vietnamese deep roots, but nowadays Vietnamese coffee has gained its own reputation and differs from the rest of the world.
Not only is tasting coffee in Vietnam an experience but also learning how it is prepared is the key to understanding Vietnam’s love affair with coffee. The correct way to brew this bold coffee drink is to use a special, single-serving, metal filter cup and press. Ground coffee is spooned into the filter, tamped down by the press and then boiling water is poured through the metal cup. The process takes a little bit of time but it will definitely help travelers relax while enjoying the aroma of the fresh brewing coffee. The resulting strong coffee is then sweetened with the addition of condensed milk and called café da. Café sua da is the name when the café da is poured over a tall glass of ice and served with a straw.
The Buon Ma Thuot highlands in Dak Lak Province located in Central Vietnam, are considered the country’s capital of coffee.
