The Mahachai Rollercoaster…

Mahachai

Last Saturday morning we went to Wong Wian Yai Railway Station, to take the train to Mahachai.
This line is a bit of an oddity in as far as it was never physically connected to the rest of the State Railway of Thailand network. The station too is from days gone by, surrounded by small alleys and a fresh market.

I doubt if the price of the ticket covers the actual costs; 10 baht. Probably the cheapest form of transportation around for a 1-hour ride!

The train makes several runs to Samut Sakhon, an old harbor town which is better known as Mahachai.
I got on the 8.30 am train, a ramshackle open-door commuter affair, which goes on a single track and passes unknown parts of Bangkok interspaced with lots of countryside and plenty of (very brief 1 to 2 minute!) stops.

Train ride
At times the train ride resembled more a roller coaster than anything else, which is not surprising considering the condition of the tracks…
One hour later we arrived at Mahachai Station, similar to Mhae Klong Station, here too vendors immediately covered the tracks with their wares…
Mahachai is well known for its seafood, which was pretty obvious, some heavy fishy smells at times!
From the train market we walked through crowded alleys and a street with bicycle rickshaws still in use to the nearby harbor and found a boat that offered a 50+ minute tour all the way to the sea and back.

This turned out to be really interesting, we passed lots of different boats, shipyards and large ships, occasionally accompanied by birds.
We had an excellent seafood lunch afterwards, a great way to finish this Saturday off before returning home.

Khiri Travel offers this as a semi half-day tour with transfers, either from/to Bangkok or continuing to Amphawa, Kanchanaburi or Hua Hin.
