Realizing Khao Sok’s Potential as a World Class Wildlife Destination

There are many natural wonders that visitors to Khao Sok can discover during their time here. These range from the fascinating geological features, the majestic forest floral giants, the arboreal agility of the primates, the spectacularly colourful birdlife, and the weird and wonderful world of the reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. But the problem up until now has been that very few of the local guides have had both the knowledge and the English skills with which to help bring these wonders to life for their guests.

Hopefully this is about to change. A dedicated team of foreign and local members of the wildlife tourism industry is about to embark on the first thorough guide training course for local guides in the Khao Sok area. This course will provide the guides with the theory on a number of natural history subjects, English language and vocabulary skills that they can use when guiding, and practical learning ‘on the job’ so to speak by conducting many ofthe sessions out in the forest, in a similar way to how they would guide guests on activities.

It is hoped that after completing this course guides will be able to guide with more confidence, and feel a greater sense of pride in their profession. This in turn will help their guests to learn more about the natural history of Khao Sok, and to have an overall more enjoyable experience. These are all integral to Khao Sok realizing its potential as a world class wildlife watching destination.

There are still a great many things to be done before the course gets under way early in May. Many of the team is still out and about, busy trying to recruit local guides for the course. Despite some very generous contributions from Khiri Travel and from Our Jungle House owner Dick Sandler, essential funding is still needed so that the course can go ahead. I am busy trying to assemble all of the training material, as well as walking and kayaking all of the different parts of the park so as to know where will be the best spots to take the guides for the practical parts of the course.

As you can see there is still a way to go before we will be ready for this exciting new venture of ours. Keep an eye on this blog over the coming weeks to see if we are ready to go when the time comes, and once we are under way, to follow the progress of the guides as they discover how fascinating and exciting Khao Sok and their jobs here really are.
