Lamphun Longan Festival – a True Feast for the Eye
The parade of the annual Lamyai (longan) Festival in Lamphun province was a feast for the eye.
This is by far the most beautiful parade I have seen this year in Thailand, eclipsing the parades of the flower festival and Songkran water festival. The variety of traditional dress was just amazing.
Longan, known in Thai as lamyai, is one of the prize-winning fruits grown in northern Thailand. The peak of the harvest season comes during the start of rainy season. The fair, held in the provincial capital of Lamphun about half an hour from Chiang Mai, features a contest to judge the best fruit, floats made of fruits, a wonderful parade and a contest to select each year’s Miss Lamyai.
Lamphun has a long history of over 1,000 years with several cultural and religious events to take place, this is one among many that shouldn’t be missed.
