Local Snacks and Street Life in Yangon
For travelers who want to sample local snacks, Yangon’s 19th Street in Chinatown is the place to go. Street vendors are always nearby selling their snacks while locals and foreigners alike are washing them down with glasses of local Myanmar beer. One of the most famous snacks consists of a mix of fresh garlic, combined with peanuts and some let-phet, tea leaves salad, that lends moisture to this tasty hors d’oeuvre. The salty flavor comes from the deep fried fish ingredient, which makes it pair well with a cool glass or bottle of beer.
Other exotic snacks include fried cockroaches, worms (fried or alive) and sometimes bees. Listen carefully though; there is a thin line between the sound of “fried bees” and “fried peas” in Myanmar language. Just caution your travelers to know what they are eating.
