Vietnam Wedding Season Has Opened
In Vietnam tradition, clothing, rituals and routines are very diverse depending on ethnicity, era, occasion and location. However, their traditional wedding customs all involve, an hoi, the betrothal ceremony and le dinh hon, the engagement party. These events as well as the wedding ceremony and the wedding reception can all be celebrated on the same day. It all makes for one festive celebration!
The tourism high season months for Vietnam, November to February, are exactly the months when the wedding season is open.
Preparations for the traditional Vietnamese wedding first begin by choosing a date and time for the marriage ceremony usually decided by a Vietnamese Buddhist monk, spiritual leader, or fortuneteller due to the spiritual nature of the occasion.
The wedding itself consists of a set of traditional ceremonies such as asking permission to receive the bride and bringing the bride to the groom’s house. Both Vietnamese in their home country and Vietnamese living abroad may also choose a more modern style wedding.
At the end of the wedding ceremonies, the reception is a big celebration for the two families and their guests. Large quantities of beer and lavish food are consumed. Symbolic gifts are commonly exchanged such as wedding umbrellas, gift boxes, and lanterns. It is also a time for the bride and groom to receive blessings from both families. The marriage unites them as a couple as well as “marries them” to their partner’s family.
