Sustainable Picnic Experience

Khiri Travel has developed a new product to give travelers an opportunity to enjoy a picnic lunch while supporting a local community. The tour starts with a transfer by Khiri Travel’s stylish tuk-tuk to a private riverboat on the Mekong River. After about 25 minutes ride down river, the boat will dock at a secluded sandbar. Surrounded by the tranquil flow of water and shaded under a lovely umbrella, travelers will enjoy a meal of authentic local food for a picnic lunch at a pre-planned location outfitted with comfortable rugs and cushions. By avoiding paper and plastic products, and serving food purchased at a local family restaurant near Luang Prabang, the whole affair is authentic, yet sustainable. The finishing touch is a cool and crisp glass of Beer Lao.

Explore Pakse by Cycling

Travelers will meet their guide at their hotel and cycle to Wat Luang. They can stroll around this ancient temple where the surrounding villagers fish and forage for food. Next stop is Wat Chomphet, an artistic temple known as the Buddha Sandstone Carving Center, a community of 13 families working together carving Buddha statues. We continue cycling to Wat Sadao and the location of the largest market in Pakse. There is also a walk uphill to a giant Buddha statue and magnificent panoramic views overlooking the confluence of the Nam Kong and Nam Xedon. The cycling tour ends after stopping at a restaurant for a drink and snack where the driver will transport the bike riders back to their hotel.

Hidden Luang Prabang

On an early-rise walking tour of the local morning market travelers wander through small alleys to explore all the products on display from the rural areas. We a stroll down the main streets in the heart of the old city of Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to Wat Khili temple monastery as well as Wat Mai and Wat Pa Huak, some less familiar monasteries. This part of the city was designed with slow travel in mind and visitors should take the opportunity to soak up the ambiance and appreciate the hidden graces of Luang Prabang. Wat Pakkhan is another picturesque monastery located at the end of the old city’s slim peninsula that overlooks the Khan River just before it flows into the much larger Mekong River. This is also a good place to stop and contemplate the gorgeous views of riverside gardens and the mountain scenery beyond.
