April 30, 2015 by | Filed Under: Authentic Experiences, Culinary, News, Thailand

Koh Klang is a small, peaceful island located just five minutes away by boat from the town of Krabi. A stay on the island offers an intriguing insight into a traditional southern Thai hospitality away from the crowds of the tourist resorts nearby. The friendly Muslim families living here maintain a simple and modest life, which they are proud to share with our visitors. Guests can overnight at a welcoming eco village resort or in homestays run by the islanders.

This island is a traditional fishing community where visitors can see the interdependent relationship between land and the sea, observing the people’s daily rituals as the tides rise and fall. Community members use ingenious methods to capture fish, crabs and shellfish. Koh Klang is famous for its fresh seafood and is one of Krabi’s major seafood producers.

The other major industry on the island is rice farming. The majority of the interior of the island is dedicated to growing khao sam yod, the local brown rice that has a unique flavor from the mixture of salt and fresh water that irrigates the rice paddies. Koh Klang also has community arts and crafts groups to visit and places to observe batik painting and artists making woodcarvings. Travelers can even make their own batik.
