Winning Images of Street Life in Yangon

Our regional dmc offices regularly handle educational travel groups. This past March, our Yangon office hosted two groups of students from NHTV University in the Netherlands. As part of their educational travel trip and a fun little marketing exercise, we asked them to take a photograph that best captured their impressions of Yangon. Kristel Smeenk and Ine Vandenwyngaert were selected for their excellent images.

Educational Travel - Kristel - Myanmar

Kristel is from Belgium and is studying International Tourism at the university in Breda. She is passionate about traveling to discover other parts of the world. “My dream is to present a television program about traveling, which can give me the opportunity to travel the world, learn, meet interesting people, and see amazing things.”

Educational Tavel - Ine - Yangon - Myanmar

Ine is studying International Tourism Management at the same university and her ambition is to work in tourism also. “Ever since I was little, I’ve had a passion for traveling and art. I have already captured memorable moments in destinations all around the globe.”

The idea of organizing the contest for the students was to understand how these young student travelers see Yangon compared to how the students perceive the local people see their city. The supervising professors thought this educational aspect of their trip to Myanmar would help the students. Ine at first felt overwhelmed by Yangon, a busy city cramped with street vendors and people “always on the move. ” For the contest, she was specifically looking to capture characteristics that differentiate Yangon. Commenting on her winning picture she adds, “it doesn’t really relate to tourism in Yangon, but to the daily life.” Ine likes how her photo represents someone finding peacefulness despite the chaos of the city.

Student Kristel liked the idea of the contest to look at the destination in different ways. Like Ine, Yangon’s crowded streets impressed her as well as the smiling people and “playing children, delighted with small things.” Kristel decided a picture at a market would represent Yangon best and snapped her winning photo while shopping for a Burmese longyi together with fellow students. About her photo, she says, “The woman drew my attention because she looked very proud with a strong facial expression. She was wearing the typical yellow sun cream [thanaka] on her face.” Her photo also shows other typical aspects of the Myanmar people’s daily lives: apartment balconies with drying laundry and Burmese advertisements.

As a prize, each of the two winners received a coffee table book with lots of photos of Myanmar. The photo contest was a big success for the student groups as well as for Khiri Travel Myanmar.
