In preparation of the 2015 Myanmar Elections, every week we speak to a citizen of Myanmar about the impact tourism has (had) on their daily life. In a period of 10 years time Kyaw Tin developed from farmer to English speaking licensed tour guide!

I also learned from tourists. The best way was to practice with them. – I am so proud to explain our religion, history and culture to clients.

My name is Kyaw Tin. I live in Taung Be village near Bagan. My family are farmers. I have a second job to transport tourists for sightseeing. When I was young, my father taught me about how to ride and drive the horse cart. But he couldn’t speak English, so it was difficult to communicate with tourists. I wanted to help my father. I needed to learn English speaking. After three years I can speak good English and I became a horse cart driver and guide.

During that time I also learned from tourists. The best way was to practice with them. I have many recommendations from tourists, so that now I have very good business with good income money for my family. After 10 years, I have a good opportunity to join tour guide training. I have a license and try to be a good guide for my clients.

In Bagan we have over 3000 stupas and temples from the 11th to 13th century. I am so proud to explain our religion, history and culture to clients. We hope tourism in Myanmar increases in future.
