Trading Polo Ponies for Tuk Tuks in Sri Lanka

Tuk tuk polo is a fun loving game and scheduled to begin in Sri Lanka in February 2016. The following is an attempt to explain the rules of this highly sophisticated competition:

Sport & Games - Sri Lanka

There are two teams with three players per team. Each player sits in a 3-wheeled tuk tuk accompanied by a tuk tuk driver. Both gentlemen and ladies may be players. Gentlemen may only hold the polo mallet with their right hand; ladies may use both hands. In the event of a dispute about a player’s gender, the umpire’s decision will be final.

An organizing committee determines the size of the playing field. The game consists of two, 7-minute chukkas of playing time with a halftime interval of 15 minutes. To ensure fair and unbiased play, tuk tuk drivers and goal ends will be changed at halftime. There are other good and proper rules to govern where and how tuk tuks can approach the opposing goal. The umpire will issue penalties for breaking the rules.

The club will supply all the tuks tuks. All participants except tuk tuks must wear a protective helmet. In the event of an accident, play stops until the tuk tuk player is replaced. Teams can have up to three replacement players. Tuk tuks can fuel up at halftime and after the final whistle. Drivers can have water and players an arrack sour, a delicious cocktail, but not vice versa.
