Vietnam is well known for having one of the toughest visa policies in Asia, but despite this, there has been a nearly 30 percent increase in tourist numbers this year.

There have however, been a number of winners recently. In a statement from a spokesperson of the Vietnamese Government Office, citizens from five European countries will be pleased to learn that the visa-waiver scheme allowing them a free 15-day visa, has been extended until June 30, 2018. This information has not been officially released by the Vietnamese government; however we hope to be able to confirm this soon.

Citizens of France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK will see the positive results of this decision and the government hopes this will further convince tourists from these countries to continue visiting in large numbers.

Unfortunately, citizens of other nations have not been so lucky. The VTA (Vietnam Tourism Association) and the TAB (Tourism Advisory Board) are disappointed to learn that no further inclusions have been made. In particular, there had been hopes that citizens from Canada, India and Australia would be added to the visa-waiver scheme. In 2015, it was declared by the Tourism Authority that Australian tourists were the largest contributing group of foreign tourists and it was widely expected that they were going to be added to the scheme.

It remains unclear if the government plans to consider other countries for the waiver scheme but in the meantime, expect to see more arrivals from those five lucky European Countries.
