Discovering the True Spirit of Rattanakosin

November 8, 2017 by | Filed Under: Authentic Experiences, Thailand, Travel

Rattanakosin Island is an area full of colourful markets and stunning temples; not to mention the grandeur of Wat Pho temple complex and the dazzling Grand Palace with its Temple of the Emerald Buddha. But there is also another side of Rattanakosin – the oldest part of the city – that embodies a truly oriental spirit.

Located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River in Phra Nakhon District, the historic Rattanakosin area marks the official founding site of the city just over 200 years ago in 1782 by King Phra Phutthayotfa (Rama I) – the first king of the Chakri Dynasty.

Rattanakosin Island is not actually an island at all, but it is bordered by the Chao Phraya River to the west and several canals that were constructed behind it – east of the Grand Palace – forming a kind of ‘moat’ that fortified the ancient walled city against possible attack by the Burmese.

On our Khiri Travel Thailand Signature Tour we take you on a guided walk around Rattanakosin Island to discover some of the less trodden paths and sights, including an unusual park, holy trees, glittering stupas and peaceful out-of-the-way temples.

We also stop off to browse the Amulet Market; relax in a riverside park; and explore the local communities. At the walk’s end we enjoy a delicious lunch at a very local riverside restaurant, a place full of character that harks back to bygone days of the mystical Orient.
