A Bear’s Life at Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center
If you’ve ever been wild about bears and want to learn more about why they are threatened in Cambodia, then there’s no better place than the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre. Established in 1995, within an area of over 6,000 acres of protected forest, it’s Cambodia’s largest zoo complex.
Here you will find out just what it takes to care for over 130 rescued sun bears and Asian black bears, also known as moon bears – an exciting behind-the-scenes tour with the volunteer ‘Free The Bears’ team, which runs various bear sanctuaries in Cambodia and other parts of Southeast Asia.
Tour the rescue center’s world-class facilities and learn about their Education Programme, Research Programme and what they are doing to build a brighter future for these bears in the wild.
You can also help the ‘Bear Care Team’ to prepare food, enrichment toys and special treats to keep the bears happy and healthy in their forest enclosures.
Best of all, by taking part in this unique experience, you’ll be contributing directly towards helping care for bears rescued from the illegal wildlife trade.
After a traditional Khmer lunch, you will tour more of the fascinating wildlife at Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre.
Finally, you can help the keepers to hide food in the bears’ forest enclosures and watch them as they excitedly seek it out.
Then it’s back to Phnom Penh, in time to prepare for your own dinner and special treats!
