February 26, 2018 by | Filed Under: Press Release, Sustainability

As part of Khiri’s 25th Year Anniversary Celebrations, please join Khiri Cambodia on Saturday March 3rd 2018 for their World Wildlife Day event.

The team will be heading out for the day to learn about Cambodia’s special creatures and get a peek behind the scenes at Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center run by Wildlife Alliance and the public are invited to join the event too. As part of the initiative we want to teach locals and tourist, among other things, about the unintentional damage that is caused to wildlife that is often used for taking photos and selfies.

Look at the #notaphotoprop Slow Loris cut out – 1 of many animals that we know people take selfie photos with. The Slow Loris is often taken from the wild in Cambodia to be used for entertainment and to gain profit from tourists and locals; who pay money to have their photo taken with this very cute little creatures. Sadly many of these animals are killed during the capture process and those taken often die due to lack of proper care, some that are rescued can never be released back into the wild as they have no survival skills or they have had their teeth removed so they don’t bite people and cannot fend for themselves.

Get everyone to take selfies with this cut out and share via social media as well, ask friends and family to do the same.

In December 2013 the United Nations declared 3 March, the day of signature of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), as World Wildlife Day. This day focuses on educating, celebrating and raising awareness of the world’s wild animals and plants. World Wildlife Day has now become the most important global annual event dedicated to flora and fauna. As many of Cambodia’s creatures are endangered or under serious threat due to illegal poaching, trafficking, encroachment and pollution, it has never been more important for people to get involved in conserving and protecting the natural riches and resources that the country has to boast. And together through education and responsible interaction we hope to show locals and foreigners how we can help the beautiful wildlife before it is too late. Wildlife has a fundamental value and contributes to the ecological, genetic, social, economic, scientific, educational, cultural, recreational and aesthetic aspects of sustainable development and human well-being.

For these reasons, we invite each and every one of you – staff, family, friends, agents, clients and government servants to observe and get involved in this global celebration of wildlife.
