Traveling Off the Grid in Laos
Laos is truly the ultimate ‘off the beaten path’ destination of Southeast Asia. Visitors don’t have to travel long distances to find themselves completely off the grid. Within a five-minute drive from the international airport, you will be surrounded by rice fields and friendly rural villagers.
With far fewer tourists and much less modern infrastructure than surrounding countries, Laos will give travelers the feeling of stepping back in time. Getting in touch with a local, traditional community has never been so easy. Furthermore, if one is willing to learn to say some easy pleasantries such as “hello” and “thank you”, travelers are assured to have some interesting interactions.
Another easy way of getting off the beaten path is to explore this beautiful country by public transport. The poor condition of the roads and highways only adds to the experience! Unwind, be adaptable and enjoy interesting situations. Soak up the rural Lao way of living and enjoy being away from western stress.
If your guests are real adventure seekers, they may choose to explore the old Ho Chi Minh Trail in southern Laos, or primitive rural tribes in the mountains of the north. Nearby are caves where local people ran to escape the heavy US bombing during the Indochina War. More than 20,000 Lao villagers used to live and work in this cave. It contained a hospital, a school, shops and even a theater!
Our team is more than pleased to advise clients on where to go and how to get off the beaten path. Regardless of your preferred way to travel, getting to the remoter parts of Laos has never been so easy!
