Khiri Travel Myanmar Celebrates World Water Day 2018

In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly officially designated March 22 as World Water Day. This international day, coordinated by UN-Water in collaboration with governments and partners, focuses attention every year on the importance of water. The theme for World Water Day 2018 is ‘Nature for Water’ – exploring nature-based solutions to the water challenges we face in the 21st century.

The other 24 wells have been set up in different dry zones near Bagan and other areas which suffer severely from lack of water in the dry season, as well as areas with no access to clean water during other times of the year.

The newest well will be built at Pakokku Quarter 6, Magway Region, and upon completion there will be an official opening ceremony in the local community.

Khiri staff are attending the ceremony and will meet up with the whole community in order to train them on how to run the project in a sustainable manner, and to educate them further on the importance of clean water and water conservation.

We are focusing attention on the importance of water and showcasing previous projects that demonstrate how lives have been dramatically improved with access to safe drinking water; positively affecting health, livestock and farms, children’s education and the livelihoods of those communities.

In addition, we will be sharing the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal #6, which commits to ensuring that everyone around the world has access to safe water and proper sanitation by 2030, and includes targets on protecting the natural environment and reducing pollution.

World Water Day is about taking action to tackle the world’s growing water crisis. Today, there are over 2.1 billion people living without access to safe water supplies in proximity to their homes, spending countless hours walking long distances to find an available water source, which is often contaminated. As a result, not only do they have to cope with the health impacts of using dirty water but also with the financial burdens involved.

The global water crisis includes challenges such as water scarcity, water pollution, inadequate water supply and the lack of sanitation for billions of people in developing countries. The day brings to light the inequality of access to WASH services and the need to secure the human right to clean water and sanitation.
