Blue Vanda, Nyaung Shwe, Myanmar
Waking up in a stilt bungalow overlooking Inle Lake may be the iconic dream, but in reality, the majority of travelers save a good amount of money by resting their weary selves in Nyaung Shwe, a small charming town that is actually the gateway to the lake. This traditional town has changed over the years: first, the backpackers came in swarms, then beautiful boutique hotel options like the Blue Vanda, began to take shape.

Located on the southern edge of the town, the Blue Vanda’s small, family-style bungalows are as sweet as they are warm and homely. The eye-catching grass lawn in front these spacious wooden accommodations, combined with the cool weather of Shan State, harmoniously create an atmosphere akin to spending the night in one of the luxury resorts on the western shores of the lake.
Blue Vanda cares about the people of the region and the environment, choosing to recycle and reuse where possible, and hiring from the local communities around them. The resort is owned by Ko Aung Kyaw Soe, a popular local man active in the local fitness and F&B scenes of Nyaung Shwe.
The town of Nyaung Shwe itself has several attractions, making it a worthy stop for a day or two before you consider traveling on to the lake. The hotel is a few minutes’ walk from several attractions and markets alongside the bustling town centre, with tasty local food joints and coffee houses to enjoy after your exploration of its colorful streets.
A family style hotel with spacious villas and great value for your kyat, Blue Vanda certainly gets the Khiri Travel stamp of approval.
