Idyllic Island Life Biking on Rural Koh Pdao
One of the largest islands in the Mekong River, Koh Pdao is situated near the city of Kratie in northeast Cambodia, a perfect place to immerse oneself in local rural life where age-old ancestral agricultural methods and traditions are still practiced.
For Khiri Travel’s day tour to this beautiful river island idyll, you depart by car early in the morning after breakfast with your private English-speaking guide and arrive in Sambou village on the banks of the Mekong at about 9.00am. You then board a small local boat for your trip to the island where you will enjoy a leisurely bike ride through beautiful tropical fruit orchards and charming countryside.
Accessible only by boat, Koh Pdao is home to a number of small fishing communities, and while there are no roads on the island, a network of tracks and trails linking the local communities make it an ideal place to walk or cycle around and meet the friendly locals. Community spirit is strong here and visitors will constantly find themselves being invited into the homes of people they meet along the way.
Another big attraction of Koh Pdao is the abundance of birdlife along the island’s river channels, but the biggest lure for visitors is a stretch of river to the north of the town, which is home to a pod of rare freshwater Irrawaddy dolphins, the town’s main tourist attraction. It is estimated that there are only between 66 and 86 dolphins left in the upper Cambodian Mekong River.
The quaint little communities, countryside and wildlife of Koh Pdao will leave a lasting impression on your clients that will stay with them, long after they return home.
