Seeing Life in Kandy from a Local Perspective

July 19, 2018 by | Filed Under: Authentic Experiences, Sri Lanka, Travel

Kandy is well known for its grand temples, the hospitality of its people, colourful streets and markets, but it’s not often you get to spend the day with a local family from this royal city and experience its sights and sounds from a local perspective.

Meet Bandula and his wife Ganga, who will be your host family for the day, taking you on an adventure to see the city through their eyes. English may not be Bandula’s strong point, but his excitement and enthusiasm to show you life in Kandy from his perspective, makes up for it.

990 Kandy tour

We begin with the bustling and colourful markets – an ideal spot to get in step with the local pace of life. These days, visitors to Kandy tend to be whisked away to popular tourist attractions like its spice gardens, geared toward selling tourists spices and herbal products at overinflated prices.

However, we think that markets are the heart and soul of a town, as this is where most locals come to shop and chat! At Khiri Travel Sri Lanka, we take pride in presenting you with a truly authentic experience, because travel is, after all, a journey into another culture. So instead of falling into the tourist trap, join Bandula on a trip to the market, were you can be sure of local prices and genuinely friendly people.

Back at their beautifully kept home, Ganga will usher you in with a warm smile and a welcoming gesture and offer you a meal of paratha, a flatbread that is a traditional staple of Sri Lanka; hoppers, a Sri Lankan version of a thin pancake with crispy edges; devilled chicken and dhal curry.

Food always brings people together, so now is your chance to get to know a little more about the family. The meal is then followed up by a cup of tea or coffee, followed by a few delicious Sri Lankan sweets that use a whole range of ingredients from rice flower to treacle and coconut milk!

990 Sacred Tooth Relic

Since you are now part of the family, Bandula and Ganga will take you to the famous Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, where they will guide you through the local rituals of adoration and worship of Lord Buddha. Our suggestion is that you dress up in white or light-colored tunics of the kind that local devotees wear. You can also purchase flowers with the local vendors outside that will be presented in the worshipping ceremony.

With Ganga’s home-cooking still warm in your belly and a tranquil peace of mind found in the presence of Buddha, it’s time to bid farewell to your warm-hearted hosts. You may never see them again in this life, but your day in their company will be a cherished one that will stay with you forever.
