Traversing the Danu Trails in the Shan Highlands

July 17, 2018 by | Filed Under: Authentic Experiences, Myanmar, Travel

One of the most beautiful regions for trekking in Myanmar is the Danu Trails, a network of hiking routes in the Danu Self-Administered Zone northwest from Inle Lake that includes the townships of Pindaya and Ywangan.

Surrounded by stunning mountainous scenery, the elevation makes the region an ideal spot for Khiri Travel Myanmar’s four-day trek that takes you from Ywangan town off the beaten track into local Danu village communities; passing through pristine forests, valleys, fields and into the homes of friendly local families, who are only too ready to welcome you for the night, share their food, and talk about their lives and traditions.

A government-recognized ethnic group in Myanmar, the Danu people have their own language and are known to be skilled farmers, growing predominantly tea and coffee. They are also well-known throughout Shan State for their traditional songs and colorful folk dancing.

The little town of Ywangan can be reached in a number of ways including a captivating public bus ride from other destinations in the region – including Nyaungshwe – the principle gateway by boat to Inle Lake. It’s also possible to fly to Ywangan from Heho situated east of Inle Lake, home to the region’s main airport.

At an altitude of over 1,200 meters, the climate in Ywangan is cool, making it an ideal destination for year-round trekking. However, during the winter season from mid-October to February it can turn quite chilly in the evenings, so be prepared.

Khiri Travel’s eye-opening four day trek brings you face to face the region’s people – small Danu villages, farmers tending to their crops, local village children, as well as the stunning topography of the region itself.

Rolling hills, hidden trails, temple ruins and even a cave with a creek running through it, are just some of the fascinating sights your clients will encounter. One of the highlights of the trip is a visit to what is probably the region’s most spectacular falls, over 100 meters high.

During the trek you will also meet a former doctor who uses purely traditional medicines and healing techniques in his village community. A very friendly, welcoming man, we spend one night at his home with his family in a beautiful house overlooking his village.

On the last day of the trek we arrive in Ye-U, a town in Shwebo District, over 200 km across the Shan Hills from where we began the trek in Ywangan. Here, your clients will be transported back to civilization and their hotel in Ywangan by car, before heading on to Kalaw, Heho, Inle Lake, or other regional destinations.
