Where can we find this hotel?

This upscale 4-star international resort is located in the middle of Old Bagan in a historic setting between the old palace wall and the banks of the Ayeyarwady River. It is only ten minutes by car to the local airport in Nyaung U.

Why do we like it?

Two unique features of Aye Yar River View among many other hotels nearby are the romantic bungalows fronting 300 meters of riverfront and the fantastic dinner show. The resort’s architecture resembles very much the surrounding temples and therefore integrates artfully into the character of this ancient landscape.

What are the surroundings like?

Old Bagan is the heart of the vast and dusty floodplain of the Ayeyarwady River where large and small ancient temples and pagodas rise above the arid vegetation to define the landscape of former dynasties. Experience the charm of riding in a horsedrawn carriage to visit the nearby temple sites and local markets. Nearby is the Hotel @ Tharapa Gate, which offers great stays as well.

Why do we like it?

The hotel is an exquisitely restored 2-story French colonial villa. Originally constructed as a cottage in 1935, the villa houses four units each with two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a mini kitchen. The units can be rented as hotel rooms or serviced apartments for longer term stays. Each room of the villa has a beautiful mountain view.

Why do we think it’s special?

The café next to the villa is a former train car from 1910. The renovated train car is bright and airy as a unique place to dine or just have a good cup of coffee. The mountainous views and the authentic atmosphere are ideal for a relaxing time and an incomparable experience. Having a meal in this quaint piece of history will make your travelers feel like they have stepped back in time. The café also has live rhythm and blues music in the evening.

What can we do in the surroundings?

The Gili Islands are surrounded by coral reefs so swimming, snorkeling and diving are right nearby. There is also a glass bottom boat and a turtle sanctuary to explore. The Gilis have outlawed the use of motor vehicles so transportation is only by walking, bicycling and a ride in a charming horse drawn cart called a cidomo.

Koyao Island Resort, Koh Yao Noi, Phang Nga Bay, Thailand

This resort is located on the coast of Koh Yao Noi, one of two large islands in the middle of Phang Nga Bay. Koh Yao Noi, made famous as the location of the James Bond movie “The Man with the Golden Gun”, is only about 10 km long and 12 km wide and lies only 15 minutes by boat from it’s larger sister island, Koh Yao Yai.

Why we like it?

There are 20 bungalows that are all very spacious and can sleep 2-6 people. The Thai inspired design is warm and modern with lots of wood and other natural products. For example, the bedposts are made of driftwood. Most of the villas only have three walls, with an open front facing the sea. This means your travelers can watch the sunset or sunrise from their bed. There are also air-conditioned villas available.

What are the surroundings like?

Despite being less than a two-hour journey over land and sea from Phuket International Airport, staying at Koyao Island Resort feels like being on a deserted island. The views of the Andaman Sea with the dramatic karst mountains are stunning. The surroundings host a whole menu of activities to enjoy in this tropical paradise such as snorkelling, diving, rock climbing, biking, and kayaking. One can also enjoy cultural experiences such as Thai cooking, muay thai martial arts, and batik painting.

What are the alternative options for this hotel?

The other, more exclusive, option on the island is the Six Senses Koh Yao located just up the beach from Koyao Island Resort.

Muang La Resort, Oudom Xay Province, Laos

Where can we find this hotel?

Muang La Resort is in the heart of northern Laos equal distant from China and Vietnam. The journey to this remote area requires about one hour travel by road from Oudomxay airport or about five hours by road from Luang Prabang. Alternatively, it can also be accessed in four hours by road from the Chinese border at Boten.

Why do we like it?

Their location near to a natural hot spring and the way Muang La Resort helps the local community is amazing. The resort was constructed in 2007 in partnership with the local population. With the agreement of the village chief, this partnership completed several development projects such as flood control along the river, road maintenance, and construction of a public bath and bridge over the river.

What are the surroundings like?

This somewhat secret location is situated on the edge of a small traditional village with around 100 inhabitants. Surrounded by rainforest, on the banks of a river and isolated from mass tourism, this ecologically friendly lodge is the ideal base to explore the rich culture of the ethnic peoples living amidst the regions rice-fields and mountains. On a hill overlooking the resort is an ancient Buddha reclining majestically above the river valley.

What can we do in the surroundings?

Hue has various points of ecological and historical interest, such as the Citadel, the Royal Tombs, Thien Mu pagoda, Dong Ba market, and Thanh Toan tile roof bridge. Other attractions nearby include Truc Lam zen Monastery, and Thuan An Beach. The hotel offers a shuttle bus service to and from Hue city center.
