A Sea of Activities at the Con Dao Islands
Welcome to a group of 16 small tropical islands an hour away from Saigon. The Con Dao islands offer immense natural beauty: forested hills, deserted sandy beaches and arguably the best diving spots in the whole of Vietnam.
The biggest island is Con Son. Here, the Six Senses Con Dao is tucked away between lush tropical mangrove vegetation and the wide ocean. The resort has been built with the lightest ecological footprint and is the first five-star resort on the island.
Con Dao is part of a maritime national park. The islands are mostly rugged and still have a lot of original forest and exceptional flora and fauna. An example is the dugong or sea cow that live in the waters around the islands. Back on land, clients might spot squirrels, monkeys or turtles. The WWF helps conservation in the area.
Today, the Con Dao islands have a very relaxed and colonial feel. In the past however, the island saw darker times when it served as a prison island for political prisoners during the French colonial period and later during the Saigon regime. The infamous cells on the island were known as ‘tiger cages’. Travellers to the island can visit the restored prison, which is now a museum, and learn about the cruel history.
Other activities that Khiri Travel Vietnam can organize are a trip with scuba-diving and snorkeling, a visit to fishing villages, or a an exploration of the local market to see the daily life of local people. Con Dao is definitely a place for nature lovers, but also an opportunity to visit an unspoiled tropical island before development pressures get too high.
Clients can reach the tropical island on a one-hour flight from Ho Chi Minh City.
