Asiatique: A New Development on the Chao Phraya River

March 28, 2012 by Khiri Travel | Filed Under:

Back in the early 1900s, during the reign of King Chulalongkorn, Asian countries were under threat of invasion from European powers. King Chulalongkorn took the initiative to protect and develop Siam. He decided to establish trading relations with western powers. One of the first was Denmark. Part of trade development process was the construction of a pier belonging to the East Asiatic Company, a business dedicated to the export of teak wood. It was owned by Hans Niels Andersen, a Danish shipping magnate.

The pier signalled the beginning of international trade between Siam and European nations. Trade was part of a process that would allow Siam to maintain its sovereignty and independence.

Today, that same area which the East Asiatic pier occupied is being restored and gentrified under the name ASIATIQUE The Riverfront. The project is the first multi-faceted dining, shopping and entertainment development on the banks of the Chao Phraya River.

Asiatique will feature hundreds of shops and dozens of dining outlets in a wharf-side setting that aesthetically salutes the early 20th century. In recent years the retail and business pulse of Bangkok has moved from the Chao Phraya and Silom areas of Bangkok to the Siam-Sukhumvit axis.

Khiri Travel believes the completion of Asiatique will go a long way to putting riverside areas back on the map for Thai people as well as tourists.
